NKP is actually the railroad reporting mark (license number) used on railroad cars of the New York, Chicago and St. Louis railroad. NKP was for the nickname "Nickel Plate Road". "Nickel plated" was a late 1800's term synonomous with high-quality (like gold-plated). A March 1881 article in the Ohio Norwalk Chronicle is credited for first applying the term to the railroad, and it was adopted officially.
