A history of steady growth

George W. Sully and Earl B. Miller foresaw the need for quality paving operations in Southern California. From our beginning in 1923 with five highway employees, one asphalt plant and a team of mules, Sully-Miller Contracting Co. has grown into one of the largest contracting and materials companies in the area. Our growth and expansion mirrors the urbanization of Southern California. The majority of streets and sidewalks in Long Beach were carved out and paved by our crews. As freeways developed and became the transportation arteries of California, we were a part of this infrastructure growth.

A record of success for more than 80 years

Recognizing the cost and quality control benefits of providing the materials for construction work, we purchased the rock, sand and other operations of Blue Diamond in 1975. The United Rock pit also was part of this acquisition. With the purchase of our construction operations and asphalt plants by Colas in 1998, Sully-Miller Contracting became part of one of the world's leading road construction and maintenance groups.
